The psychological, military, and diplomatic challenges posed by China’s sudden rise and uncertain future are inescapable for Japan. Asia retains its hierarchical pull, and Japan and China have never been powerful at the same time the way they are today. Chinese and Japanese aspirations also collide. Both nations are motivated by a profound sense of incompleteness. China seeks territorial integrity and a return to its central role in the region, but it confronts a Japan that seeks to move beyond the post-war period and to reestablish lost national pride. Japan’s economic interdependence with China provides stability to the two countries’ bilateral relations, but not a certainty or predictability about where they will head.
